The Basics of Acai Berries

January 13, 2009 by ajpaters

What is the big deal about acai berries?  Is it one more fad or is it really a beneficial nutritional resource?  Probably a little of both.
Acai berries come from the Amazon Rain Forest.  They are small, delicate, and spoil easily.  Now you know why they can be a bit pricey.
Some of the health claims include that the acai berries are loaded with antioxidants.  Antioxidants attack free radicals which, in turn, cause cell damage, which can, in turn, cause some diseases such as cancer or heart disease.
Will acai berries prevent cancer?  I wouldn’t use that as my sole cancer fighting resource.  There are many foods loaded with antioxidants, such as red beans, pinto beans, apples, and most other types of berries.
Acai berries have also been promoted as a boost to weight loss efforts.  The high amounts of fiber certainly might help in that area.  The flavor of the acai berries is supposed to be pretty sweet with a hint of chocolate.  If consuming acai berries satisfies a sweet craving, what could be better than that?
